This single-session class, taught by Harvey Lankford, will take place on Thursday, July 16. Learn about the history of the ascent of Mt. Everest and modern-day mountaineering and trekking.
Mt. Everest continues to fascinate both armchair and real mountaineers alike. The seven pre–World War II British expeditions to Everest will be discussed, along with images of expedition maps and photographs. Beginning in 1921, with familiar names like George Mallory, the quest for “The Third Pole” is a fascinating story, culminating with the successful ascent in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. Having stood in some of those boot prints in 2000 and 2014, the speaker will offer insight about this land of thin air.
Endocrinologist Harvey Lankford is a 1972 University of Richmond and 1976 MCV graduate with mountaineering and trekking experience on five continents. While not up high, he writes articles about mountaineering history, mountaineering literature, and high altitude medicine. His two most recent works were “Himalayan Heat: George Mallory and Glacier Lassitude” in the Himalayan Journal (September 2014) and “Dilated Hearts at High Altitude: Words From On High” in High Altitude Medicine and Biology (December 2014).
