9 June (Wed) Hopewell waterfront and Appomattox River C/4

Tim Gilbert (804-304-8841) and Ann Lankey (804-338-1771) will lead a hike along the Hopewell waterfront and Appomattox River.  This hike of about 5 miles will include City Point riverfront (where the James and Appomattox Rivers meet), Appomattox Plantation (where General Grant had headquarters during the end of the Civil War), some nice residential neighborhoods, and the new Hopewell Riverwalk.

Meet at the Appomattox Regional Library, 209 E. Cawson Street, Hopewell at 9:50 A.M.

Parking is in the large municipal parking lot behind the Appomattox Regional Library.  Parking is free.  The library opens at 9:00 A.M., so restroom facilities will be available.  As usual, announcements will begin at 9:50 A.M. and the hike will leave at 10:00 A.M.

We will pass through the City Point Open Air Museum, which includes 25 storyboards, although we will not be taking time to read all the storyboards.

After walking one mile, we will arrive at General Grant’s Headquarters at City Point.  The grounds are open to the public.  The Manor is officially closed.

We will walk the grounds of the manor, then go to the City Point Boardwalk.  We will
hike through some residential neighborhoods to the Hopewell Riverwalk, which is 1700 ft. long and opened  April 2019.

The total length of the hike will be 4.0 miles plus the distance covered on the grounds of the Appomattox Plantation Manor.
