Contact Art Ritter (o2behiking@yahoo.com). I’m trying to explore new trails, and here is a new one for me: the Red Gate Fire Road between Big Meadows and Hawksbill Gap at Fishers Gap. This is going to be an out and back, with a length of about 9.5 miles, a descent of 1,550 feet on the way out, and a climb of 1,550 feet on the way back. The grade is generally between 3-6 degrees. I am calling it a B-3 because it is close to 10 miles, but it will really be more of a B- or C+. There are no grand views on this hike, but it should be a pleasant walk through forests in the park, with fall colors still possible at the lower elevations, and nice, open views through the trees at higher elevations. Because I have learned the hard way to carry water shoes, I will be doing just that, although I doubt I will need them. The forecast as of Friday looks chilly, so layers will be the operative word. Meeting time will be 7:30. Contact Art to sign up and get other information.
