December 29 (Wednesday) John J. Radcliffe Conservation Area on the Appomattox River - Southern Chesterfield D/4
Ted McGarry (804-218-1238). This is a first time hike for the Club. Caroline and I hiked this Dec. 25 and it took 2 hours. The hike starts on a remote section of the Appomattox River at the foot of the Brasfield Dam (Lake Chesdin). Two trails make a 3.1 mile loop with the first half being a natural trail in pretty Piedmont woods adjacent to a marsh with plenty of tree roots! which makes it slow. The return trail is a level fine graveled trail along the bank of the Appomattox River with many vistas and is easy. No trash on the trail! Description and trail map are at chesterfield.gov/920/trail-systems. This hike is 31 miles and 45 minutes from the Willey Bridge in western Henrico. You can use I-95 to Colonial Heights and follow GPS. or to avoid I-95, I recommend using Chippenham Pkwy to Iron Bridge Rd (Rte.10) to Chesterfield CH, Right @ 655 Beach Rd, Left @ 636 Nash Rd., Right on 626 Woodpecker Rd for 200 ft., Left and continue on 636 Nash Rd, Left @ 602 River Rd., Right @ 669 Chesdin Rd. (see blue sign for Appomattox River Water Authority). Mutiple lunch options along Rt 10 near Chesterfield CH. Meet at 21501 Chesdin Rd zip 23803. at 9:50 AM.
