MARCH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING - at Tuckahoe Library
When: Tuesday, 14 March 2023
6:30 PM
Come and meet club members as spring approaches.
Dr. Jory Brinkerhoff, a biologist from the University of Richmond, will discuss his research related to the ecology, genetics, and behavior of Lyme disease-transmitting ticks that may give insights into the recent Lyme disease epidemic in Virginia.
Lyme disease, first described clinically in 1975, has emerged as the most common tick-transmitted disease in the northern hemisphere with an estimated 300,000-400,000 cases per year in the United States. Lyme disease was uncommonly diagnosed in Virginia through 2006, but cases increased three-fold between in 2007, and since this spike in cases, Virginia has accounted for the 11th most Lyme disease cases among all states.
Reasons for the dramatic increase in disease incidence are unclear and could be driven by increased clinical awareness or natural processes that are linked in increasing numbers of ticks. Of note, counties in the western and southwestern portions of the state have seen the largest increases in case reports and there has been a steady progression of the disease to the southwest along the Appalachian Mountains in recent years.
We will meet at 6:30. Business meeting starts at 7:00
