Hazel River / Sam's Ridge / Berry Hollow (C3)

  • 27 Mar 2023
Because of parking, this trip is limited to 4 people and one car.  I already have two of us going, so we can take two more people to this hike in a rarely visited part of SNP.  The hike is in two parts with a 20 minute drive in between.  We will have to carpool from Oilville in just one car.

Hike #1 - Hazel River / Sams Ridge.  It is a loop in a remote part of the park that we will hike counter clockwise so that the steepest part will be on the return.  Judging from the topo map, it looks like about 1,500 feet or so of elevation gain and loss.  The first part of the hike goes along the Hazel River.  I plan on bringing water shoes just in case.  This will be about 6 - 6.5 miles.

Hike # 2 - The second hike is a short one, just because I want to knock it out while I am up that way.  It's the Berry Hollow Fire Road, 0.8 miles each way out and back.  It connects to the Old Rag FR.  The parking area is approached from heading to the White Oak Canyon parking on the east side of SNP, then heading north for a bit.  It looks like 300-400 feet or so of climbing, then the same descending at the turn around point.
