CANCELLED - Apologies, but I have to cancel the Wednesday hike this week. This will be about a 4-mile hike around the historic Gaines Mill Battlefield, part of the Seven Days Battle in the summer of 1862. What once was the site of suffering and carnage is now a place of peace and nature. Meet at the (fairly small) battlefield parking area near the Watt House at 9:50. We'll hike for about two hours. Possible post-hike lunch site to be determined (I may be traveling that afternoon and if so, will have to skip lunch.) Directions: From I-295, take exit 34A heading northeast on Creighton Road. After about a mile, you will reach a traffic circle, from which you will take the first exit on VA-156 - effectively making a right-hand turn from Creighton Road. Travel another 1.6 miles, and where VA-156 makes a very sharp bend to the left towards the Cold Harbor Battlefield, stay straight (it's actually a slight right turn). You will reach the parking area in about 0.7 miles from the bend in VA-156. If you reach the Cold Harbor parking area, you have gone too far, so turn around. Hike leader is Art Ritter. Contact is o2behiking@yahoo.com if you have any questions. There is no need to sign up in advance.
