April 8 (Mon) Powhatan State Park; 5-miles (C3)

Steve Parker (Stephen.parker4@verizon.net or 804-955-7179) and Jay Henderson (hendje3@gmail.com or 804-244-2287) invite you to join them for a solar eclipse viewing hike at Powhatan State Park.  The eclipse starts about 2pm and will peak at 3:18pm. The sun will be 84% obscured during the peak. Meet at 2 PM at the Trailhead/Equestrian parking lot on the left-hand side of the road. There are restrooms at this parking lot.

You need to wear proper eye protection to view the eclipse. Eclipse glasses should meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. There will be eclipse glasses on sale at the park visitor center for $1 (while supplies last).

Follow the entrance road approximately 1.5 miles to the Trailhead/Equestrian parking lot on the left-hand side of the road. We will begin hiking promptly at 2pm. The hike will be approximately 5 miles. We will return to the parking lot. The trail may be wet, with numerous trip hazards such as leaves, roots, and horse poop piles. It is suggested that all wear hiking boots and walking sticks at your discretion.

From Richmond, go to the interchange of Rt. 288 and Patterson Avenue (Rt 6), driving West along Rt. 6 approximately 13 miles, taking a left onto 522 South. After crossing the river, continue for 1.9 miles looking for the Powhatan State Park sign. Turn right onto Rt. 617. From Southside, take US 60 West from Midlothian, then US 522 North to a left turn onto Rt. 617. Travel on Rt. 617 for 1.4 miles, turning right into the park. Upon reaching the park, pay the parking fee or display your state park pass.
